Pension Manager

The Pension Fund for Hospital and Health Care Employees (“the Fund”), located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is currently seeking a Pension Manager who will report directly to the Executive Director. The ideal candidate will be an experienced leader with deep knowledge of defined benefit and defined contribution pension processing and a thorough knowledge of legislative and compliance requirements. This is an in-person position with no option for remote work. The Pension Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Hospital Pension department and the Nursing Home Pension department, supervising a staff of three (3). This includes developing and monitoring policies/procedures and performance standards, and ensuring compliance with relevant statutes, regulations and requirements (including ERISA, DOL and IRC). In addition, the Pension Manager must interact collaboratively with the Executive Director, the Trustees, plan participants and plan professionals. The Pension Manager will act as a liaison with the Fund’s professionals and enforce plan rules, policies, procedures, and priorities. The successful candidate will also be responsible for effectively communicating plan and policy changes to office staff, participants, and employers, and provide guidance.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of the position include (but are not limited to):

  • Oversee and monitor all aspects related to the day-to-day operations of the Fund to ensure financial and operational accuracy and compliance. Work closely with the Fund’s Controller to coordinate pension payment and banking activities.
  • Ensure that all benefits provided by the Fund are processed accurately and in accordance with all documented plan rules and government regulations. Oversee and approve all communications with plan participants.
  • Establish and monitor policies, procedures, and standards to ensure a level of professionalism and prompt, accurate service to retirees and beneficiaries.
  • Oversee and keep current on all aspects of technology used in the administration of the Fund. Work with vendor(s) to ensure adequate systems and technology are maintained to support the Fund’s recordkeeping, processing, and customer service needs.
  • Provide vision, leadership, guidance, and motivation to staff members.
  • Work collaboratively with the Executive Director to establish and monitor strategic goals.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant plan statutes, regulations and requirements, and submission of government mandated forms.
  • Manage the appeals process and provide an appeal summary for Board of Trustees meetings.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will meet the following requirements:

Work Experience: Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in defined benefit pension and defined contribution benefits administration in a multiemployer setting is a must. Minimum seven (7) years of leadership experience. Experience in a Taft-Hartley and/or collectively bargained environment preferred.
Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree or commensurate related experience required. Advanced degree or certifications (e.g., CEBS) preferred.

Special Skills or Credentials:

  • Experience with multiemployer fund operations and extensive knowledge of pension benefit plans as well as related governmental/legislative regulations (ERISA, DOL, etc.) including knowledge of plan design and interpretation is preferred.
  • Strong decision-making and organizational skills with the ability to optimize the use of all available resources and deliver on multiple priorities. Strong project management skills, including the ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively in order to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to constructively interact with staff, at all levels of the organization, as well as outside professionals and service providers.
  • Highly organized with the ability to motivate others to be organized. Flexible team player that can lead effectively as well as provide support to others in leadership roles.
  • Innovative and creative thinker with an ability to identify tasks that may be automated and implement necessary changes. Proficiency with current technology (especially MS Word, Excel and Outlook) and experience with benefits administration systems (experience with ISSI Benefits Administration system is a plus).
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, judgement and work ethic.

The Fund offers a salary range from $90,000 - $105,000 depending on experience and a generous and comprehensive benefits package that includes pension, annuity, and health and welfare benefits. The position also includes paid time off and sick leave.
